Green Housing

Located in Greater Fifth Ward/Denver Harbor, the LEED Platinum certified Sakowitz development contains 166 units and is New Hope Housing?s largest single room occupancy affordable housing community. The enduring building design will prove durable, resource efficient, and cost effective to operate, with materials of above-average quality used for maintenance efficiency.

Sakowitz was designed by distinguished Texas architect Val Glitsch and is the first LEED certified affordable housing in Texas and Houston?s first green multifamily housing development. Green features include a water retention system, use of recycled materials, a water conserving irrigation system with rain water tanks, sustainable landscaping and roofing, paving and plantings that reduce heat island effect.

Sakowitz has two buildings with fully furnished units, community and dining areas, a community kitchen, business center, library, central laundry rooms, barbeque grills, patio areas, a horseshoe pit and a courtyard with a gazebo. The development is situated within a one-mile radius of a full-service grocery store, a convenience store and several restaurants. It is located in a transit-oriented area near a METRO bus hub.

All but nine units are available to individuals with incomes between 50-60 percent of Area Median Income (AMI), with the remaining nine set aside for those earning no more than 30 percent of AMI.
