Public Housing

NEF, Inc. and LISC have always been about rebuilding distressed communities. But it takes more than faith in a deal to make safe, affordable housing a reality. Nowhere is that more apparent than in efforts to revitalize traditional, deteriorating public housing, where public-private partnerships are key. NEF, Inc. and LISC have collaborated with some of the most creative housing authorities in the country to support a diverse range of large and small, rural and urban, new and rehabbed public housing. In the process, we have learned that local housing authorities face unique challenges when considering revitalization and often require a different range of technical support as they move forward. Housing Authority Resource Center

That's why, with NEF, Inc. support, LISC founded the Housing Authority Resource Center. HARC provides technical assistance to housing authorities making the transition from property management to development, bringing together both LISC pre-development funds, NEF, Inc. equity and the experience of local community development corporations in support of these efforts. We also support the NAHRO Access Alliance, which delivers expertise and predevelopment funding to its member housing authorities through its partnership with NEF, Inc., LISC, Enterprise and Bank of America.

Featured Project: Near North

Near North Apartments

This five-story, 96-unit building in Chicago takes a fresh approach to SRO development with a remarkable design by noted architect Helmut Jahn.

Near North features many “green” elements rarely found in affordable housing developments, including aeroturbines, solar thermal collectors, a grey water system and recycled rainwater. Sponsor Mercy Lakefront, provides on-site supportive services that help formerly homeless residents reclaim their independence.
