Supportive Housing: Homeless Veterans
National Equity Fund is building on its extensive experiences in structuring and financing supportive housing to focus time, talent and resources on the growing problem of homeless veterans. Estimates from HUD conservatively put the number of homeless vets on the street at any one time at 140,000, representing one-fifth of the nation's homeless population.
NEF Homeless Veterans Initiative
In 2006, NEF began focusing efforts on how to tackle the issue of having enough affordable housing units with the right services to address this growing at-risk population, and the NEF Homeless Veterans Initiative was born. Download brochure.
Our Partners
NEF has partnered with veterans organizations and VA Consultants to promote the development of supportive housing for homeless veterans on unused excess VA land. These alliances are very valuable in helping our development partners secure sites and begin building projects. Download homeless veterans fact sheet from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Helping Homeless Vets
There are an estimated 18,000 homeless veterans in metropolitan Chicago but no affordable housing development to meet their needs. St. Leo Residence for Veterans
addresses that need and was the first project funded under NEF's Homeless Veterans Initiative. Construction on the $20.2 million dollar project was completed at the end of 2006 and is now home to 141 residents, who have access to an adjacent heath and employment center.
NEF has an existing pipeline of 10 potential projects targeting homeless veterans from New York to California, and we hope to expand by another 10 projects in the coming year.
