The Carlton Apartments won the 2024 Charles L. Edson Award for HUD Preservation and was honored at the ceremony in Washington D.C last week.

Located in the Sheridan Park Historic District of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood and built in 1925 as a hotel, the Carlton Apartments were transformed in 2022 from 70 single room occupancy units into 68 studio apartments for individuals struggling with homelessness and/or residents with special needs. The historic building with its Collegiate Gothic architecture was first renovated and converted into permanent supportive housing in 1993. Mercy Housing led the current rehabilitation and reconfigured the first floor to increase common area amenities, and modernized the units in the building, especially kitchens, bathrooms and common areas. The Carlton Apartments legacy of providing affordable homes to extremely low-income Chicagoans experiencing chronic #homelessness and disabilities will continue well beyond its 100-year-anniversary.

Congratulations to our partners at Mercy Housing Lakefront and the investors involved in making this outstanding affordable housing development possible. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL-9) presented the award at the official award ceremony.
