New construction is not the only way to fight against the housing crisis. Preserving existing affordable housing is just as important as creating more units. Our partners at Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation have been carrying out this mission for decades and their most recent rehabilitation of Boulevard Apartments reaffirms their commitment to preserving affordable housing in Chicago.
Bickerdike first acquired and rehabilitated these three historic buildings more than 30 years ago and recently completed more upgrades to the units and building systems. Boulevard Apartments is an example of what the preservation cycle should look like: keeping units not only affordable, but high-quality, modern living and community spaces! Half of the 70 units are affordable for households earning up to 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and the other half are restricted at 60% AMI with 27 apartments eligible to serve households at 15% and 30% AMI due to existing subsidies. The mix of unit sizes and affordability make Boulevard Apartments a safe haven for families and individuals who want to remain in the increasingly gentrified Humboldt Park and Logan Square neighborhoods.
